Dr. Oltean has over 20 years of experience in experimental microsurgery and is still actively involved in the field. He has been continuously involved in clinical and translational research on abdominal organ transplantation with a special focus on organ preservation and ischemia-reperfusion injury (kidney, liver, intestine), the immunobiology of brain death, and intestinal transplantation (rejection monitoring, intestinal preservation).

He is a keen educator and was instrumental in the establishment of the Swedish ISEM Chapter (2014). Dr. Oltean is a co-founder of the Scandinavian Microsurgery Academy (2013), the only microsurgical training laboratory in the Nordic countries. He was involved in over thirty microsurgery courses attended by several hundreds of local and international participants.

Dr. Mihai Oltean is the recipient of multiple honors and awards including The 2021 Sun Lee Outstanding Microsurgery Career Award. He serves on the Editorial Board of Microsurgery, International Reviews of Immunology (section editor), and Assistant Editor for European Surgical Research. He is the current President of the International Society for Experimental Microsurgery and served as Councilor of the Intestinal Transplant and Rehabilitation Association (2017-2021)
